You’re only at the ideal time in your pregnancy for maternity portraits for a few weeks, so you might not have a choice of seasons for your maternity photo shoot. But if you’re hitting that timeframe in the fall, you’re lucky because fall maternity photos can be absolutely stunning! As you’re planning your wardrobe for your photo shoot, here’s what to look for.
Flowy Dresses in Fall Colors
Flowy gowns or dresses are perfect for maternity portraits for several reasons. They look great in photos because they flow in the wind, they make your baby bump look especially lovely, and they’re easy to fit to your body which, at this point in your pregnancy, is changing by the day. Opt for these lovely dresses in fall-friendly colors that also complement your skin tone and hair color.
Autumn Textures
Textures are fabulous for adding a little extra oomph to any portrait. Luckily, fall offers plenty of fun and beautiful options. Scarves, hats, wraps, and certain jackets can all look gorgeous with your maternity dress. Added bonus: they also help you stay warm during an outdoor photo shoot on a chilly Indiana fall day.
Stylish but Comfortable Shoes
Even if your gown is full-length, your feet will probably show in at least some of your portraits, and your shoe choice is important. You want shoes that fit your portraits’ style but are also comfortable enough to wear without pain. A popular choice in the fall is a flat or low-heeled ankle boot. Ballet flats can be great too if it’s a warm day.
Earthy Neutrals and Muted Colors
When you’re choosing colors for your maternity portraits, fall is a great time for muted colors and earthy neutrals that complement colorful fall foliage. Stark colors like white and black can be too striking for fall, unless you pair them with more muted colors (like a black dress paired with a cream wrap or a denim jacket. It’s better to aim for colors like tan, gray, sage green, burnt orange, and so on.
Tips for Choosing Your Fall Maternity Photo Wardrobe
The high points above will guide your wardrobe, but if you want a few other tips to help you with the fine tuning, try on these for size:
- Choose colors that complement your backdrop. Consider what colors decorate the landscape at your photo shoot location. If we’re going to a location I’ve photographed before, I’ll be happy to offer my advice!
- Consider your visual theme. Fall maternity photos can take on many looks, from rustic and quaint to elegant and dramatic. Think about the overall aesthetic you want and make sure all of your wardrobe pieces fit that look.
