When to Take Maternity Photos

Schedules and calendars are a constant part of pregnancy. You’re always keeping an eye on how far you are in your pregnancy so you can imagine where your baby is in their development and know what to look for at this stage. There are schedules of doctors’ visits, vitamin regimens, and so much more to keep track of. Not to add one more entry to your calendar, but here’s another scheduling question you’ll want to ask: when should you take maternity photos?

Don’t worry! As your Lafayette maternity photographer, I have all the answers you need.

When in Your Pregnancy Should You Take Maternity Photos?

There’s a “sweet spot” in your pregnancy when you want to have your maternity photos taken. The goal is to wait until your baby bump is very well-pronounced so we can highlight the beauty of your form, but not to wait so long that you’re too uncomfortable to enjoy the experience (or are so close to your due date that you could go into labor at any time).

Generally, that sweet spot is 30-36 weeks. It can vary, though, based on individual circumstances. For example, if you are likely to give birth early, such as if you’re having twins, we may want to schedule your photo session a few weeks early.

When Should You Book Maternity Photos?

Now that you have an idea of when your maternity photo session should take place, when should you be scheduling your maternity photos? How far in advance should you put this on your to-do list?

As much as I would love to tell every expectant mom’s story, my schedule can book up a few months in advance. I recommend that you contact me and book your maternity session a few months ahead of your desired session date – the beginning of your second trimester is a good time to book.

If you’re already further into your pregnancy, please contact me anyway! There are times when I have cancellations and openings in my schedule, so I would be happy to find availability for you if possible.

Do You Need to Book a Maternity Photography Location?

This is another common question about booking your maternity photos: do you need to book a location? Typically, no – I have a wide range of locations I’ve discovered that are fantastic for taking portraits, such as public parks, that don’t require any booking. When we’re planning your dream maternity photo session, we’ll chat about location options based on the aesthetic you want.
