New parents often ask me if they should be in their baby’s newborn photos. For my newborn photography in Lafayette, IN, I offer my clients two options: an abbreviated photo session that only features portraits of your baby swaddled in my premium wraps and a full session that includes those sweet solo newborn photos along with an add-on option for portraits of your baby with you and/or your other children. While both sessions can give you beautiful newborn photos you’ll cherish, there’s something even more special about portraits of you and your little one together.
Some new parents are hesitant to hop in front of the camera, but there are several reasons you’ll be glad you did:
Capturing Your Precious Family Bond as New Parents
Your new baby is the apple of your eye and you could spend all day just watching them be tiny and sweet. What you aren’t able to see is the look in your eye when you’re gazing at your baby with all the love in the world, or the way your bond with your baby looks from someone else’s view. The love you have for your baby truly comes through in portraits of you together, and so many parents love these photos as reminders of that instant and overpowering love they felt for their baby.
Creating Heirlooms for Future Generations
As a parent, you might not care about seeing yourself in portraits. Your kids will, though. Your baby obviously won’t remember the way you are with them today or the person you are at this time in your life. In the years to come, especially when your kids are older and possibly even having or considering families of their own, they will adore the chance to see this version of you in their newborn portraits. It gives them a way to get closer to you and to know who you were when they first came into your life.
New Parents Enjoying a Bonding Experience
Most people invest in newborn photography because of the finished portraits, and sure, it’s worthwhile to have beautiful professional portraits from the first weeks with your little one. But what’s truly priceless is the opportunity to share this bonding experience with your baby.
The first weeks and months of your baby’s life can feel like a blur, between feeding and soothing your baby at all hours of the night and fielding visits and messages from loved ones who want to meet the new member of the family. Your newborn photo session is an opportunity to slow down for a bit and enjoy some time to simply love on your baby and embrace this fleeting stage of life.
