Your baby’s newborn portraits will become beloved keepsakes that you will hold dear, valuing them more and more as your child grows up. While they’ll feel special in any case, you want to love them and be able to display them proudly too, and for that, you need to find the right newborn photographer for your family. How exactly do you know who’s the right fit? As a Lafayette, IN newborn photographer, I suggest these tips.
Find a Specialized Newborn Photographer
First things first: choose a photographer who specializes in newborn photography. It doesn’t have to be the only type of photography they offer (in fact, it’s great if they offer baby photography for your little one’s first year too so you can keep working with the same photographer), but it should be one of a few specialties. The techniques used in newborn photography are very different from those used in, say, wedding photography or headshot photography. You want a photographer who’s highly experienced in these skills.
Check Out the Portfolio
As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone has their own aesthetic tastes, and every photographer has their own style. When you’re considering photographers, check out their portfolios of newborn portraits and see whose look best aligns with the look you want for your baby’s portraits.
Make Sure Your Budget is Compatible
As much as you’d love to say that money is no object when it comes to your baby, every family has a budget to consider. Newborn photography pricing varies considerably, both in the session fees and in the prices for images and prints or products. You don’t want to have a session with a photographer only to find out that you can’t afford to buy the images you love, so make sure to get an idea of pricing in advance.
Consider Whether You Want a Studio Session or Lifestyle Session at Home
There are generally two types of newborn photography sessions: an in-studio photo shoot or a lifestyle photo shoot at your home. Most photographers offer one or the other, and some offer both. There are pros and cons to each, so it’s simply a matter of knowing what you prefer and choosing a photographer who provides that service. I, for example, offer studio photography because it lets me set up the environment perfectly for newborn portraits and have all my accessories and props at hand. Plus, you don’t have to worry about getting your home photo-ready. But it’s all a matter of personal preference.
