For many of my newborn photography clients, I have the honor of guiding them through their first newborn portrait experience. Some are first-time parents and others have previous children but are finally treating themselves to the newborn photos they didn’t get when their first kids were born. Whatever the case, I’m here to make it smooth and simple for you with a preview of what you can expect.
Step 1: Booking
The first step, of course, is booking your newborn photos. How do you do this if you don’t know when your baby will be born? I recommend that expectant parents contact me around the start of their third trimester of pregnancy. This allows me to reserve space in my calendar based on when your due date is. After your baby is born, you’ll reach out to me and we’ll set a specific date and time for your photo shoot with all of those planning details in mind.
Note that some parents book earlier because they book both their maternity portraits and newborn portraits at the same time. I recommend booking maternity photos around the start of your second trimester and I’m happy to reserve your newborn photos at this time too.
Step 2: Preparing and Packing for Your Session
I’m proud to provide a newborn photography experience that makes it easy for you as a parent. My Lafayette, IN studio is already stocked with all the wraps, props, accessories, and other items we’ll need. When you’re preparing for your session, all you need to bring is yourself, your baby, and anything you might want to keep your family comfortable during the session like bottles, diapers, a book to read, and so on.
Step 3: Your Session
Finally, your photo shoot has arrived! I maintain a relaxed and low-stress atmosphere in my studio, so expect a photo session that is cozy and enjoyable. I’ll ask for your help to feed your baby and soothe them to sleep as needed, but otherwise, you can just relax and let me work my photo magic.
Your session will vary based on the package you chose. My “That’s a Wrap” package features an abbreviated session that lasts about 60 minutes and focuses only on wrapped portraits of your baby. My “All the Things” package has a longer session lasting 2-3 hours and it can include portraits of you and/or your other children with your baby. If you choose this session, please arrive camera-ready. Don’t worry, we’ll discuss more of the specifics when you book your session.
Step 4: Previewing Your Portraits
Here’s the big reveal! After I’ve had a chance to review your photos and choose the best ones, you’ll be able to see them and choose your favorites. You can select the portraits you love most and order any framed prints, canvas prints, or other products you choose.
Step 5: Enjoying Your Newborn Photos
The last step is the best one: receiving your beautiful prints and other products so you can start cherishing your baby’s once-in-a-lifetime newborn portraits. Whether you hang them on your walls or show them off on social media, you’ll be able to treasure your new portraits for a lifetime.
