Newborn photography is a popular tradition that leaves you with a timeless and treasured heirloom your family can enjoy for not only years but generations. But most people don’t think much about it until they’re expecting a child. If you’re welcoming a new baby to your family, learn what to expect with these answers to the top questions my clients ask at my Lafayette, IN photo studio.

When and How Do You Book Newborn Photos?

It might surprise you to learn that you should actually book newborn photos before your baby is born. It’s best to choose a photographer whose work you love and reach out to them around the beginning of your third trimester of pregnancy. This lets us pencil you in based on your due date. Then, when your baby is born, you’ll contact your photographer and finalize a date for your baby’s photo session. Don’t worry – we know babies and their birth dates can be unpredictable and we’re happy to be flexible!

Are Parents and Siblings Included in Newborn Photos?

Each newborn photo session is unique but in the case of my studio, yes! With my “All the Things” newborn photography package, I’ll capture portraits of you with your new baby as well as your other children. Of course, I’ll still take plenty of solo portraits of your baby. Keep in mind that I also offer a shorter “That’s a Wrap” session which only includes wrapped portraits of your baby.

How Long Does Newborn Photography Take?

Newborn photography sessions tend to be longer than most other types of photo sessions like maternity and family photos. We want your baby to be sleeping soundly in most of their portraits, and a longer session gives us the time for feedings, allowing your baby to settle into poses, and so on. My “All the Things” newborn session takes 2-3 hours, although I also offer a condensed “That’s a Wrap” session which takes one hour.

Should You Bring Outfits for Newborn Photos?

For family photos, the most stressful part of the experience for parents is figuring out outfits and keeping the kids looking nice for the portraits. You don’t need to worry about that in newborn photography – in fact, you don’t need to bring any outfits with you. I have all the wraps, accessories, and props I need to create stunning portraits you’ll love. You are, however, welcome to bring any special items you want to photograph with your baby, like one of your own baby outfits or a blanket that Grandma knit for the baby.
