Newborn Portraits: What to Wear, Outfits for Parents

newborn

What should you wear for your newborn portrait session? Newborn portraits are the perfect way to celebrate the beautiful new member of your family and to preserve this incredible time of your life. But newborn portraits aren’t just about the baby. They can be an excellent opportunity to capture that special bond between you and your new child, and to shine a light on your growing family. When that photo session comes, what should you wear as a parent?

What to Wear for a Baby-Only Newborn Photo Session

I offer the option to do a brief, 60-minute newborn session that exclusively includes wrapped or swaddled portraits of your baby. This session doesn’t include portraits of you with your baby or of your baby with their siblings.

In this case, you don’t need to worry too much about what you wear because you won’t be on camera. Just wear something comfortable, including nursing attire if you wish so you can easily feed your baby as needed. Keep in mind that I keep the studio warm to help your baby sleep through their session, so dress accordingly for a warm room.

What to Wear for Portraits with Your Newborn Baby

If you want to include the whole family in your newborn portraits, my “All the Things” session is the option for you. Here are a few tips for planning your wardrobe for this special portrait session.

Stick to Simplicity

You want your newborn portraits to be timeless and to keep the focus on your loving family. To do that, avoid wearing anything that will be distracting in the photos. Choose neutral colors and solids rather than bright colors or busy patterns. Avoid clothes with writing or prominent logos.

Stay Comfortable

Your baby’s newborn photo session is an amazing milestone moment in your life, and I want you to enjoy it! You don’t want to feel self-conscious during your portraits or feel the need to constantly adjust and tug at your clothes. Wear something that fits you well and makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Have a Backup

Take all these suggestions about wardrobe and multiply them by two – you want an extra outfit for everyone who will be in the portraits. It’s not uncommon for babies to have “accidents” while parents are holding them for portraits, so having a plan B is essential.

Consider the Wrinkle Factor

When you’re picking out your photo session outfits, think about how easy (or difficult) it is to keep each item looking nice. Try to choose clothes that don’t wrinkle easily. Not only does this mean you’ll look better in your portraits, but it means you won’t be spending the morning of your session scrambling to iron everything, and anything that takes stress and work off a new parent’s plate is a good thing.
