A Parent’s Packing List: What to Bring to a Newborn Photography Session

A newborn photography session can be a beautiful and even enjoyable way to celebrate your new little one and welcome them to the world. It’s even better when you’re prepared and have everything you need to make it a smooth and relaxing experience.

You might be relieved to learn that, as a Lafayette newborn photographer, I provide nearly everything needed for your photo shoot, including all the sets and props, wraps, and accessories for your baby. But there are a few items you should bring too, so here’s your quick newborn photography packing list.

Diapers and Related Essentials

Newborn photography takes time, so depending on the type of photo session you choose, you may be in the studio for several hours. Bring plenty of diapers as well as wipes and anything else you’ll need.

Anything You Need for Feeding

Here’s a fun fact: feeding your baby is one of the most important parts of a newborn photo session! We want your baby to be sleeping peacefully for as much of the session as possible, and it helps immensely when they have a full belly. Bring anything you’ll want to comfortably feed your baby.

Extra Outfits for the Family

Some families choose to feature only their new baby in their newborn photos, but I also offer the option to include you and your partner as well as your baby’s siblings if you choose. If you’ve chosen that option, make sure the family is camera-ready when you come to the studio but also bring an extra outfit for each person. Babies sometimes have accidents, especially if we’re taking some nude portraits of them, so be prepared in case one of those “accidents” ends up on you.

Pacifiers

As I mentioned, we want your baby to spend most of their session sleeping like the little angel they are. A pacifier can help. Even if your baby doesn’t normally use pacifiers, it’s a good idea to have one on hand in case it will help.

Comfort Items for You

During most of your newborn photography session, I’ll be working with your baby while you can simply relax in my studio. I want you to make the most of that rare relaxation time! Feel free to bring anything that will make this time enjoyable for you, whether that’s a book, tablet, portable gaming device, blanket, knitting project, snacks and drinks, or whatever you’d like.

Sentimental Items if Desired

Your baby’s newborn photos will be customized to your family’s style and personality, and they’ll always be a special reminder of this amazing time in your life. Some families, though, choose to make them even more special by incorporating sentimental items. That could include your wedding veil, a family heirloom, your family’s religious scripture, a quilt Grandma made for the baby, an outfit you wore in your own newborn photos, and so on. Just be sure to let me know in advance so I can plan the best way to honor that item in your portraits.
